Ray made his way through the kitchen shaking hands with the staff. As far as any of them were concerned, he was the new boss. They had no reason to suspect otherwise. The owner introduced him. That was good enough.

Entering the security room, Ray couldn’t help but be impressed by the monitors and surveillance equipment. Every angle was covered from at least three different points, displaying every inch of the place in high definition audio-video. A dull roar could be heard from the main entrance, echoing from the line of people awaiting entry. There was no doubt in his mind that any conversation could be picked up and recorded at any given time. Such was good for his profession, when need arose. But it seemed like a heavy breach in privacy. Ray couldn’t help but wonder how many places employed similar methods of screening. For all he knew his conversation with Crum out back had been recorded. That was potentially troublesome. But how could he ensure there was no evidence of their discussion without drawing unwanted attention to the matter? Not much had been said prior to his host’s arrival. But it was an open admittance of things that shouldn’t have been discussed in public. Ignoring the two security technicians sitting in front of the screens, Ray directed his attention to Damion. “Let’s say someone was caught discussing illegal activity while on the premises. Where would that surveillance be stored? I’m not seeing a hard drive or anything of the sort.”

Damion chuckled at the question. “We’re in the technological age. Nobody uses physical hard drives anymore. Everything is wirelessly connected to the cloud, which can only be accessed from my personal laptop or cell. Both are protected by a 256-bit encryption and require a thumb print scan. There is however a bypass code locked in a safety deposit box, accessible only upon my death. But I’m hoping that’ll never have to be used. At least not for a good long while.”

That didn’t make things any easier. Ray had to be sure there were no witnesses to the conversation prior to Damion’s arrival. He was no hacker, so getting in that way would be next to impossible. Once he warranted some privacy perhaps he’d have Damion unlock the computer, so he could have a look for himself. Though that was also unlikely. Scanning the screens, Ray found the docks. Sure enough, his Maserati was sitting out back, unmolested. He hoped it stayed that way.

Glancing at his watch, Damion punched in the access code to the sealed door and pushed it open. “We need to hurry and finish the rounds. The show starts in fourteen minutes.”

Ray stepped past and entered the long, surprisingly bland hall. It felt more like a government building in this section than a prestigious club. But it was unlikely the patrons ever came into this area. There was no sense in making it extraordinary. They passed through the kitchen once again and into the main hall. Ray was taken back by the extravagance.
